Boil water

Fill a large pot with water (about 4-6 liters for 400g of spaghetti) and bring it to a rolling boil.
Add salt to the boiling water. This flavors the pasta.

Add Spaghetti

Gently add the spaghetti to the boiling water, pushing it down as it softens so it’s fully submerged.
Stir occasionally to prevent the strands from sticking together or to the pot.

Cook Until Al Dente:

Follow the package instructions for cooking time (usually 8-12 minutes).
“Al dente” means the spaghetti is cooked but still slightly firm when bitten.

Test the Pasta

About a minute before the suggested cooking time ends, taste a strand. If it’s too firm, cook a bit longer.

Drain

Once cooked, drain the spaghetti using a colander.
ptionally, reserve some of the pasta water for sauces (it helps thicken them).

Optional Steps

Toss in Sauce: Immediately mix the spaghetti with your chosen sauce in a pan over low heat. Add a little pasta water if needed. We can also create our own home made sauce for spaghetti. You can see the short answer for that in our FAQ at the end of this article.
Add Toppings: Finish with grated Parmesan, fresh herbs, or a drizzle of olive oil.

How to make home made spaghetti sauce

To make homemade spaghetti sauce, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté 1 chopped onion for 5-7 minutes until softened, then add 3-4 minced garlic cloves and cook for 1-2 more minutes. Add 1 can (28 oz) of crushed tomatoes (or 5-6 fresh chopped tomatoes), 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, and 1 can (15 oz) of tomato sauce if you prefer a smoother consistency. Stir in 1 teaspoon each of dried oregano and basil, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional), 1/4 teaspoon black pepper, and a pinch of red pepper flakes (optional). Simmer the sauce for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens. Blend the sauce if you prefer a smoother texture, then adjust seasoning to taste and serve over spaghetti, garnished with fresh basil or parsley.
